Musical Theatre (featuring the ‘Mini-Musical’)

A workshop suitable for ages 7-18 combining all the elements of musical theatre to create an end of session performance. Students learn the basics in singing, dancing and acting from CPA director Katie Burke. It’s a fun-filled high-energy workshop that if spread over an 8-12 week period, will result in the production of a ‘Mini Musical’. This is a great workshop for team building as students are encouraged to pull together and support each other for the benefit of the performance. They receive a huge sense of achievement, whether the workshop is a once-off or a week by week programme. Music choices are suggested by CPA but Katie will work personally with each school to create a tailor made programme to suit your timetable and budget.

An upbeat, energetic workshop suitable for all ages. CPA director Katie brings her unique pop ‘mash-ups’ into the classroom creating a wave of excitement and a whole lot of fun. This one-hour workshop kicks of with a number of musical songs used to loosen up the students and break the ice. Katie moves about the students at ease with her guitar to encourage everyone to sing out and join in. This workshop moves fast, students are up on their feet moving and singing for the entire time. A basic vocal warm up follows the musical games before Katie assesses every students posture and introduces basic breathing technique. Lyrics and percussion are supplied for the ‘mash-up’ ( a selection of current pop songs ‘mashed’ together) and the singing gets underway. Once everyone is comfortable with the melody, Katie works on performance adding in soloists and harmony sections. The end result is a performance-ready, dynamic piece that the whole class will love.

Songwriting / Songwriting & Recording

A creative workshop where students learn the basics of songwriting, including structure, music & melody. We start with lyric writing in a range of different scenarios from adding to / editing other people’s ideas to starting from scratch with our own. Then students learn about the common pop format of intro, verse, chorus and how to build their song this way. We then learn how to create melody, and put melody to lyrics. Students are encouraged to bring an instrument such as guitar / keyboard if they play, if not Gary will provide accompaniment, where students put their melody to music and finalise their song.

Depending on the length of workshop the next phase can be learning how to perform their song in a studio environment and record it. Students receive a CD of their song for which they can also design and create the cover artwork for, making the whole product their own creation.
